Voices of Democracy: Strengthening Media Literacy and Citizenship Capacities in Georgia's regions

DVV International Georgia and its partner Adult Learning and Education (ALE) centers continue to bring civic education closer to communities through the Voices of Democracy project, supported by the German Federal Foreign Office. In this challenging time, the project has already shown encouraging results, demonstrating that citizens are eager to learn, participate, and shape their communities. 

Project Goal: To support the development of an informed and participatory democratic society in Georgia.

Project outcomes: 

Outcome1: To empower the citizens of Georgia with a special focus on its regions, by strengthening their civic skills and abilities to engage with media content critically, distinguish between factual information and fake news, and actively participate in democratic processes.

Outcome 2: To enhance the operational and strategic capabilities of local partners in order to effectively support and promote democratic values and active citizenship within their communities.

Project Duration: 01.07.2024 to 30.06.2026

Main Activities: 

  • Establish 15 Civic Engagement Clubs to promote democratic participation.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive Democracy Learning Curriculum.
  • Train over 750 educators and adult teachers in media literacy and democracy skills.
  • Create and distribute innovative resources such as fact-checking guides and board games.
  • Organize workshops, public lectures, and democracy festivals in targeted regions.
  • Enhance the capacities of 75 CSOs to advocate for democratic values.
  • Conduct art installations, exhibitions, and competitions to combat misinformation.

Key Achievements from the Beginning of the Project until Today

 

  9,499 participants have joined educational programs organized by Civic Engagement Clubs -  including trainings, workshops, film screenings, public discussions, and art installations.

  Two original board games were created and implemented - Democracy Voices and Media Compass - designed to teach democratic values and media literacy in an engaging way.

  1,088 teachers and adult educators have been trained, discovering innovative methods to integrate democracy, media literacy, and critical thinking into both formal and non-formal education.

  247 civil society representatives have participated in workshops, strengthening their knowledge on crisis response, sustainability, and building strategic networks in challenging conditions.

  Fact-checking guide developed -  The Story of Sakareti: a creative tale about a family investigating false rumors on the demolition of a cultural monument. This interactive book explains propaganda, fake news, trolls, and bots, while offering practical exercises and space for readers’ own reflections.
