The Givi Margvelashvili Prize 2018 Official Award Ceremony will be Held at the Georgian Stand of the Frankfurt Book Fair

The Givi Margvelashvili Prize 2018 for Particular Contribution to the Georgian-German Cultural Relations has been awarded to Mrs. Naira Gelashvili, a Germanist, expert in literature studies, translator, and writer.

The Givi Margvelashvili Prize 2018 for Particular Contribution to the Georgian-German Cultural Relations has been awarded to Mrs. Naira Gelashvili, a Germanist, expert in literature studies, translator, and writer.

The official award ceremony will be held at the Georgian stand at Frankfurt Book Fair at 15:30 on October 13, 2018. Awarding ceremony is also planned at the Writers’ House of Georgia in Tbilisi at the end of 2018.

It is the sixth edition of the Givi Margvelashvili Prize awarded by the Goethe Institute Georgia and DVV International Georgia Country Office. 

Mrs. Naira Gelashvili’s name is associated with brilliant translations of Friedrich Hölderlin’s poetry, Novalis’ and Rainer Maria Rilke’s prose and lyrics, the poetry of Else Lasker-Schüler, Georg Trakl, Georg Heim, and others. Mrs. Gelashvili is also the author of monographs on Hölderlin, Novalis, Rilke, and Paula Modersohn-Becker and translator of extended essays about Martin Heidegger, Thomas Mann, and Hermann Hesse. Naira Gelashvili is the academic editor of Rainer Maria Rilke’s five-volume edition.

Mrs. Naira Gelashvili was the first to translate Givi Margvelashvili’s works into Georgian, including lyrics, miniatures, plays, and philosophical essays. She is also his first biographer, reviewer, and publisher. She organised and funded the publishing of Givi Margvelashvili’s philosophical and linguistic works.

Mrs. Naira Gelashvili’s works published in Germany include the documentary Georgia - A Paradise in Ruins (1993, Aufbau-Verlag) and The Anthology of Georgian Short Stories with an extended critical review (2000, Suhrkamp Verlag), also the novel, I’m the One and the short story Travelling to Madrid.

Thus, it is symbolic that this year’s Givi Margvelashvili Prize will be officially awarded to Mrs. Naira Gelashvili at the Frankfurt Book Fair where Georgia will be the Guest of Honour 2018.
