Regional Conference in Chisinau: Adult Learning and Education (ALE) as a Responsibility of Local Authorities

On September 16–17, a regional conference “Adult Learning and Education (ALE) as a Responsibility of Local Authorities” was held in Chisinau, the capital of the Republic of Moldova. The event brought together around 50 participants from Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as experts from European and international organizations. Armenia was represented by five participants including colleagues from Stepanavan Municipality, Aparan and Stepanavan ALE Centres, DVV International Armenia Country Office.

On the first day of the conference, plenary sessions with inputs by international experts had been offered. These had been followed by presentations of international and regional best practices. In the late afternoon, a panel discussion had been organized to reflect critically on the provided inputs.

On the second day, the conference participants had been hosted by the Chisinau City Hall, which organized a site visit to the Municipal ALE Centre, where the participants toured the facilities and got to know activities of the Centre, as well as the city’s approach to promoting lifelong learning. The capital of Moldova, being a member of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities, is a good example of how a city with limited resources could have developed a successful approach to promote non-formal education.

This year DVV International Moldova is celebrating its 15th anniversary. On this occasion, alongside the conference programme, a festive event had been organized, providing an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the past years together with partners.

The conference had been organized by DVV International in cooperation with the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) and the Chisinau City Hall.
